The Capitol of Puerto Rico was inaugurated the 11 of February of 1929 like seat of the Legislative Power Puerto Rican. Before its inauguration, the legislators met in the building of the former Provisional Diputación, where now is the headquarters of the State Department of Puerto Rico. The idea of building the Capitol came from the then member of the House of Delegates (today, Representatives), Don Luis Muñoz Rivera, who in the year 1907, filed a project allocating $ 300,000 for the design and beginning of the building construction work. For different reasons, the construction work was postponed, until finally, on July 17, 1925 - coinciding with the birth of Muñoz Rivera - the symbolic first stone is placed for the beginning of the work. It had been 22 years of dreams, designs, ups and downs typical of the time, when the imposing building was inaugurated, at the entrance of Old San Juan, on a surface measuring 51,814 square feet facing the Atlantic Ocean. The concept of the "Capitol" as seat of the Legislative Power goes back to North America in the year 1699 when the Governor of Virginia suggested that the new government headquarters be known as the "Capitol", in reference to the Roman Capitolium, site of the founding of the Roman Empire .
